The separator lane helps to structure entire journey maps or smaller pieces of information in a comprehensive way.

A separator is a visual aid to help you organize your lanes visually. You can give meaning to a separator by defining its title, and use it to group blocks of related lanes.

Here are some examples of separators you could use:

- Line of interaction or line of visibility if you are building a service blueprint.

- Background information, when less important content should be visually separated from your personas’ journeys, but you still would like to present this information in the same journey map.

- Data, to indicate which journeys are based on user research and which ones are based on hypotheses.

As with every other lane, you can drag separators to reorder them, change their name and hide them.
